{"id":2551,"date":"2020-12-19T16:31:50","date_gmt":"2020-12-19T11:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicplaylister.com\/?p=2551"},"modified":"2021-03-20T14:43:15","modified_gmt":"2021-03-20T09:13:15","slug":"eminem-released-his-new-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicplaylister.com\/index.php\/2020\/12\/19\/eminem-released-his-new-album\/","title":{"rendered":"Eminem released his new album &#8220;Music to Be Murdered By-Side B&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The album\u2019s deluxe version adds an hour of new music rich in dextrous delivery but intent on pushing the same old buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spotify Embed: Music To Be Murdered By - Side B (Deluxe Edition)\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"encrypted-media\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/3MKvhQoFSrR2PrxXXBHe9B?si=nDZgp82JQHWG8HsoyHMGbA\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once, releasing a \u201cdeluxe version\u201d of an already successful album simply meant appending its contents with B-sides and live tracks in order to rejuvenate its sales, squeezing the kind of diehard fans who\u2019ll shell out for any new release by their favourite artist. In 2020, however, hip-hop has significantly raised the bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deluxe versions of previously released albums by&nbsp;DaBaby&nbsp;and Lil Baby both came with what looked like entire new albums attached; the&nbsp;murder of rapper Pop Smoke&nbsp;in February didn\u2019t preclude his label finding 15 new tracks to add to his posthumously released debut album a month after it first came out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/cf68372c82e2fd7bd75af98952162e9eef066d7c\/0_0_1312_1314\/master\/1312.jpg?w=1200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Artwork for Music to Be Murdered By Side B.\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, Eminem\u2019s Music to Be Murdered By Side B features an hour of additional music to make it a fully realised piece of work. It is one that shares&nbsp;its parent album\u2019s preoccupation with Alfred Hitchcock \u2013 the late director appears on the intro; the music on Alfred\u2019s Theme is derived from Gounod\u2019s Funeral March of a Marionette, which played while the credits rolled on the TV series Alfred Hitchcock Presents \u2013 and it reacts to its predecessor\u2019s mixed reviews and the controversy it stirred with the track Unaccommodating, which featured queasy jokes about the Manchester Arena bombing. The latter provoked condemnation from both fans and the mayor of Manchester. Eminem\u2019s response is a classic sorry-not-sorry: \u201cI know nothing about the Manchester bombing is funny,\u201d he offers on Favorite Bitch, before making a joke about the Boston marathon bombing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s an argument that getting upset because Eminem has said something appalling on his new album is like getting upset because the new AC\/DC album features a man dressed as a schoolboy playing guitar: it\u2019s rather the point. In fact, AC\/DC are an apposite comparison. They\u2019ve been in the business of giving their audience precisely what they expect for decades now, which has more or less been Eminem\u2019s default position since 2010\u2019s&nbsp;Recovery. Donald Trump provided&nbsp;a flash&nbsp;of re-energised&nbsp;inspiration, perhaps because the \u201calt-right\u201d looked not unlike a significant section of his noughties fanbase: \u201cthe angry white young misanthrope who feels marginalised \u2026 with a sense of aggrievement that is out of proportion to reality,\u201d as his biographer Anthony Bozza put it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eminem\u2019s scorn for the current state of hip-hop, which informed 2018\u2019s&nbsp;Kamikaze, offered listeners the curious spectacle of Slim Shady sounding like a middle-aged dad, bemoaning the music his kids like. Other than that, it\u2019s been business as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s business as usual here: it takes 52 seconds to reach the first lyrics about assaulting a woman and three minutes to reach the first about murdering her, complete with sound effects. Mumble-rap comes in for another kicking on Favorite Bitch, 90s hip-hop is hymned, there\u2019s a jab at rappers who use ghostwriters \u2013 daring, given the guest appearance from Dr Dre, the most famous user of ghostwriters in the business. There\u2019s the usual stuff about drugs and madness; there are jokes about Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein. There\u2019s a burst of support for the Black Lives Matter movement on These Demons and Zeus (\u201cblack people saved my life,\u201d he avers) and he keeps mentioning coronavirus, particularly on Gnat, without having much to say about it beyond comparing it to himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Eminem - GNAT (Dir. by @_ColeBennett_)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EosMazKaPbU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, age has not withered the rapper\u2019s astonishing level of technical skill. If you\u2019ve heard most of what he says before, it\u2019s still possible to be awestruck by the way he says it \u2013 a breathless, relentless barrage of wordplay, puns and tricky internal rhymes, delivered in a voice that builds in intensity as the tracks go on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The music is less interesting than on its predecessor: the best thing here might be Guns Blazing\u2019s churning bass and drums programmed to sound like a succession of shots fired, but there\u2019s nothing to match the chaotically thrilling noise of Music to Be Murdered By\u2019s You Gon\u2019 Learn. Nor is there an unequivocal triumph along the lines of that album\u2019s Darkness, a brilliant depiction of the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas through the eyes of its perpetrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most interesting moments come when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/7dGJo4pcD2V6oG8kP0tJRR?si=0nMn6x_HQPWGm2Vt3c_CsQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eminem<\/a>&nbsp;confronts his own artistic dilemma head-on, worrying about the fact that he\u2019s nearing 50 \u2013 \u201cI\u2019ll be an old fart\u201d \u2013 or protesting that people \u201cwant you to change but don\u2019t change \u2026 want the new but old Shady\u201d. \u201cWhere am I supposed to go from here?\u201d he snaps on Higher. \u201cReally I have no idea.\u201d It feels like a touching moment of honesty and clarity.
